For the second year running, Zaha Hadid Architects won the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize for the best new European building built or designed in the United Kingdom for their Evelyn Grace Academy, a school in Brixton, south London.
However, it was a more modest project nominated for the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2011 which caught my eye. This residential project, Hoxton House was designed for a private client by David Mikhail Architects. The extension of only one metre in depth allowed the original house which consisted of a multitude of small rooms to be completely transformed. The addition of the glass box on the rear has meant that the garden can now be enjoyed from either the kitchen dining room or the sofa area above.
